Description
Ventless, natural-shouldered, hand rolled & hand-attached shawl collar with no buttonhole in the lapel but with boutonniere loops behind the lapel. Fully canvassed construction and fully-lined interior (feels like silk); one interior pocket in addition to the chest pocket and two jetted hip pockets. One-button closure (buttonhole hand-sewn) with two buttons per sleeve. Made from midnight blue wool and silk satin and sold through Woodward and Lothrop of Washington, D.C. Excellent vintage condition; very slight instances of scratches to the satin near the collar (see photo); sleeves already lengthened as far the cuffs allow; repair stitches to the inner lining at the armscye. Dated February 14, 1933/1934.Woodward & Lothrop (“Woodies”) began as a dry goods store in Chelsea, MA in 1873, but relocated to Washington, D.C. in 1880 as that city’s first department store. In 1886, it had settled its flagship store on the corner of 11th and F Streets NW, and within the decade occupied nearly the entire block. It expanded into a regional chain after WWII but filed for bankruptcy in 1994.
