husband and I attended the Macy?s Passport and American Express HIV/AIDS Fundraiser, hosted by Sharon Stone, in Santa Monica, September 2006. Also, in celebrity attendance was Brooke Shields who introduced Dame Elizabeth Taylor who stood to acknowledge applause upon arriving on stage in a wheelchair, before delivering a state of AIDS address at this star studded, fundraiser and fashion show.
As the auction items were being introduced and my eyes immediately fixated on one particular experience: ?A visit to Mattel Headquarters and a chance to design and produce your own Mattel Hot Wheels Car with the Legendary Designer, Larry Wood. After several paddle raises it finally came down to me, I was the only one remaining, holding my paddle in the air. ?Going once, going twice, SOLD!?
The following month, October of 2006, we made our way to the famous Mattel Headquarters in El Segundo California. We had an amazing day where we toured the most incredible and fun place to play.....I mean work! We got to see and learn how Barbie Dolls get their hair. That day we also witnessed so many other famous toys come to life right before our very eyes. Then came the most exciting experience EVER! Sitting down one on one with ?The Larry Wood? where we would proceed to design our own Hot Wheels Car that would go out on the 2007 production line.
We had our hearts set on a theme, The Solar System. We added most of the larger planets as well as an Astronaut and the bonus, an American Flag. Right then and there the ?Luna Lu Dairy Wagon? was born. We named it after our daughter whose middle name is Luna and at the time, was just over one year old. When we finished the final sketch, Larry handed it over to me as a keepsake, for the archives. I was so thrilled, that I had the sketch placed in a box-frame along with one of the Luna Lu Dairy Wagon Hot Wheels Car.
Our daughter, now a teenager has decided to share with you, her custom design.  They have been personally signed by her on the front, as well as, you will find that I have signed the back. Now you know the story behind this very rare and unique opportunity that we had so many years ago and how it lends itself towards the increasing value of a very rare and collectible item.
