Description
This GEM of a shawl-collared 1950's jacket is Great for a cocktail party, Rockabilly look, or summer cruise! Offered here is a wonderful cream colored, linen (see fabric information in vintage history below), authentic "Palm Beach" brand men's dinner jacket in very good vintage 1950's condition. The fabric is woven by the important vintage Goodall-Sanford (see vintage history below) and sold at the Chicago hallmark Bastin store. Hand-stitched professional tailoring with original button. This dinner jacket is labeled Men's 42 short inside the inner pocket, but could be worn as a women's "boyfriend jacket" for women size about 14-16-- great over a sundress or worn with jeans and a t-shirt. See the history behind this fabulous jacket below.
This jacket is
high-end quality
and is labeled "luxury lined"--which makes it very comfortable due to this wonderful quality lining. This jacket is from the infamous
Baskin men's store that had stores in Chicago, Evanston and Champaign, Illinois.
The jacket is clean and without any odors, but is vintage and not perfect condition. It would benefit from a new cleaning to make it spotless but it is ready-to wear as is. Any flaws are barely noticeable and I would say in very condition--or an 8 on scale of 1-10. Please see photos for condition and know that this is Vintage and has been worn.
The label states "Woven by Goodall-Sanford, Inc Only" and had the Baskin Chicago, Evanston, Champaign" as seen in one of the photographs. The inside pocket shows Made In USA and Model D463, size 42 Short. The fabric appears to be linen, but the Goodall-Sanford company used a cotton-mohair washable fabric in their Palm Beach suits, and I am not familiar with this fabric. At any measure--this fabric is FABULOUS to the touch and looks so high-quality.

VINTAGE HISTORY:In 1908, Goodall Worsted Co., of Sanford, Maine, purchased the patent for a tropical weight mohair-cotton blend fabric developed by William S. Nutter. Goodall called the fabric Palm Beach cloth and sold it directly to tailors and manufacturers. In 1931, the company also began to produce suits from the cloth. The washable suit was comfortable to wear and the Palm Beach suit became the staple of the well-dressed man's summer wardrobe. In 1944, Goodall merged with Sanford Mills; the label on this suit indicates that it was produced after the merger. Sanford-Goodall would continue to produce the Palm Beach suit into the 1950s. There is an example at the MET museum in New York City.
Al Baskin worked for his father's men's clothing shop in Streator, Ill., but longed to branch out on his own. After finding a 600-square-foot space in Joliet, Baskin opened up shop in August 1929, right before the Great Depression. The store, then called Al Baskin, made its way through the Great Depression and moved locations in Joliet before settling in a three-story building on Cass and Ottawa streets in the southwest suburb. It was eventually passed on to Baskin's son Shale. In 1959, the shop added women's clothing to its lineup, and a location in Bloomington, Ill., opened in the 1960s.
Operators of Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg invited Shale Baskin to open up a store in the early 1970s. But he was asked change the name to avoid confusion with a similarly named store, relatives said. So he took his first name and his brother's name to create Mark Shale.
The business would expand across Chicagoland and into other metropolitan areas, including St. Louis, Atlanta and Dallas, over the next two decades. At its zenith, in the 1990s, Mark Shale operated about 10 stores, said Scott Baskin, a former company co-president.
The company won numerous industry awards, including some for store and architectural design, Scott Baskin said.
PLEASE LOOK AT MY OTHER VINTAGE AND LIKE-NEW ITEMS. I have collected vintage clothing since the early 1980's and I am listing regularly from my private collection that has been stored in my smoke-free, pet-free home. I had a vintage shop before the internet or Ebay was started and am finally letting go of my kept collection when my shop closed in 1986.
