FOOTNOTE(S):
1* Mullen & Bluett Co. was a high end clothing department store, that catered to Man, Woman, and Child Alike, but specialized in menswear. The company was founded by William Mullen and Andrew Bluett in 1889. It's first location was a small storefront on First and Spring Streets in Downtown Los Angeles and was later moved to the ground floor and basement of the "Walter Perry Story Building" in 1910 which they occupied 28,000 sq. ft. of space in the Twelve Story 1909 Beaux Arts style building designed by the Morgan, Walls, and Clements Architecture Firm.
The Times wrote that "every piece of furniture, all of the window decorations, cases and other fixtures" were made in Los Angeles.
This location remained until the mid-late 1960s, the building still stands today and is occupied by jewelry and small retailers.
Who was WPS!?
Walter P Story, was a successful businessman, civic leader, and Major General in the California National Guard.
2* After WW2 the company expanded westward from Downtown to Miracle Mile and plans went underway in 1947 to build the new location on Wilshire Boulevard, which later opened in 1949. Stiles O. Clements designed the new two-story, 55,000-square-foot Mullen and Bluett Store which after the retailer became more or less defunct in the mid-late 1960s, the building was later sectioned off and made into a Sav-On Drug Store and Dental offices.
When Stiles Clements designed this Miracle Mile location he claimed the style as "California Modern," now time past, the terminology has changed to "Late Moderne." It was a stunning building that brought the outdoors indoors and allowed for a very "natural" and welcoming atmosphere, a very misunderstood aesthetic that seems now "very 1970s". The building was demolished in 2006.
